Today was our 6th and FINAL day of seeing the 2015 Houston Quilt Market & Festival. The theme for today's post is appropriate, I think. If you can't tell by the name of my website "Design On A Whim", there is nothing...and I mean NOTHING I appreciate more than whimsical! Today's quilt photos focus entirely on my favorite WHIMSICAL QUILTS!

But first, I'll share a few other fun photos with you. My Travel Companion this week has been Jan Sittler. Not only is she my sister...She's also my Best Friend. We are two peas in a pod and we have our mom to thank. It was our mom who instilled a love of the textile arts and we've been enjoying our hobby ever since! We had a ball together as we oohed and aaughed over the magnificent quilts and great classes we were exposed to. We egged each other on to buy great stuff in the Merchant Mall. We stayed up late talking, found great restaurants to dine at, and shared our excitement and enthusiasm we experienced along the way. What wonderful "Sister-Time" this was!
So you can see, ALL of these are whimsical. I think WHIMSY appeals to the KID in me. I may have wrinkles but I'm really just a KID on the inside.

And I'll end with several pictures of one of my favorite quilts. It's a story quilt by Sandra Branjord. It's a collaged quilt of her fantasy house. It's odd, it's humorous, it's almost a little steam punkish and I absolutely LOVE it!!!
We arrived back in Nebraska this afternoon because ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END. What a great week. My mind is overflowing with creative ideas. And after I finish my extra long workout in the morning (yes, I ate a lot last week), I'll be in my sewing room creating again. Such happy memories of an absolutely unforgettable journey to Houston!!!Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801856291436955733.post-82061656134214626582015-10-30T20:34:00.000-07:002015-10-30T20:34:04.244-07:00DAY 5...AMAZING ALPHABET CLASSFirst of all, I MUST start out today's blog with these 3 crazy women who appear to have traveled to Houston with ONLY costumes in their suitcases! So, I fondly remember Dr. Seuss and his magnificent rhyming lyrical books...but for whatever reason, I don't recall reading "1 DRUNK, 2 DRUNKS, 3 DRUNKS". When I visited with this outrageous trio, they commented, "You haven't seen anything. Just wait until TOMORROW'S costumes! I can't wait, Ladies. I can't wait!!!

And then, there was the reunion with my 3 SULKY SISTERS. I spend many days a year with each of these women and we become much like "family" as we travel around the country together. Every single National Educator for Sulky absolutely LOVES their job and we all consider it a true privilege that we have the opportunity to represent Sulky at shows across the country. You can't fake these smiles. From left to right, (Diane, Nancy, Lee and Suzy). By the way, their vests are some of their Round Robin challenges that the three of them participate in every year. As I said, we have a WHOLE LOT OF FUN together!!!

The highlight of my day...beyond the above forementioned pictures, was my all day class with Pam Holland from Australia. I have admired her children's book illustrations and this was the one class I was most excited about taking. And it was EVERYTHING I hoped it to be and then some! Her "Amazing Alphabet" class taught us how to work with a variety of pens, markers and pencils and then use our sewing machine for the "ink work". Every single student in class walked out with a good looking project and I can't wait to get home and make more of these. FUN! FUN! FUN!!!
Here's her sample of the letter "A" with "ATTITUDE".

And then I had 2 hours left to hit the convention sales floor...RUNNING...to snap up those hard to find items that you ONLY find at shows like this. Just about everything you can imagine that pertains to sewing and quilting is available for sale here. Vendors come from all parts of the world to sell their wares and it's a whole lot of fun to shop the aisles. The vendor floor space is the size of 8 football fields. You'll find the latest and greatest sewing and quilting machines, fabrics, threads, irons, yarns, storage systems, rulers, supplies, paints, stencils, patterns, dressforms, embroidery cards, and so much more. Get the picture? You name, it...it's probably in one of the 26 aisles.

One of my ALL-TIME FAVORITES of the night was "Fly Me To The Moon" by Jerry Granata.
I've never seen another quilt quite like it. It was absolutely OUTRAGEOUS and accented with
fabulously garish lame' accents!

And LAST but absolutely NOT LEAST!!! This INCREDIBLE quilt that was her FIRST quilt EVER! How can someone not only impeccably construct this and design this...YES!...It's an ORIGINAL...with itsy bitsy pieces and everything matches...AND she won the entire Pieced Quilt category. Way to go, Angela Petrocelli with your quilt entitled "Why Not". Called that because her grandma said, "Are you sure you want to start with something so challenging?" and her reply was, "Why NOT?" And the REST is history. Maybe I'll make my first quilt next year and win 1st prize. Yeah, right!!!
Ohhh...WHAT a night!!!Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801856291436955733.post-42541592786476707292015-10-27T21:26:00.001-07:002015-10-27T21:26:36.998-07:00Day 3 at Houston Quilt FestivaalIt was another incredible day at the Houston Quilt Market & Festival! I took an all day couse with Esterita Austin that involved layering sheer fabrics to create a beautiful flower. While I loved the technique, let me "fess" up and inform you that the photo shown of the beautiful iris was NOT my own work. Mine looks like a blob of sheer fabrics but I'll give it another whirl when I get back to Nebraska and hope for improvement!

Tonight my sister Janie and I attended the 2015 Awards Show, and what a show it was! For those of you who might not be familiar with this show, any quilt shown here is already a winner. Months in advance, quilters from all over the world submit photos and the quilts are then juried to decide which of these quilts are Houston-worthy. Months prior to the show, they are judged by a select team of quilting experts. Tonight's winners are the equivalent of a Gold Medal winner at the Olympics or an Oscar at the Academy Awards. First time winners instantly join the elite club of our most recognized "Quilting Stars". For veteran winners, their name remains in the forefront and they continue to be our Quilting Superstars. These are the quilters we esteem to be. The BEST of the BEST. Those of us "Wanabe's" hope to stand near any one of them, just hoping their talents might rub off on us. These amazing award winners are the "Darlings" of our Quilting World!

Highlights of the Show: First of all, This Nebraska Girl is enormously proud of my own state's Kris Vierra for winning the prestigious "Pfaff Master Award for Machine Artistry". Woo Hoo! Way to go, Kris! Well Deserved!

The Top Prize of the night went to Janet Stone from Overland, KS and Ohhh...Did I LOVE this quilt. Little bits of black & white popped the bright colors in this quilt which as far as I could tell was absolutely perfect. Kansas isn't that far away so I'm planning on heading to Kansas to drink the water...something there seems to be producing amazing quilting!

A few of my personal favorites: The Art Abstract Quilt winner called Technicolor Deco by Shirley Gisi is one I want to hang in my house.

The Judge's Choice Award won by Katherirne Donges and Susan Slaton called "A Toast to Toulouse-Lautrec" was just plain fabulous.

In the Digital Imagery category, the winner was "Tagged" by Patricia Kennedy Zafred depicting prisoner's of war held in the Japanese Interment Camps. It made you stop and think!

"My Sweet House with Kirara" was submitted by Ayako Kawakami from Japan. It was loaded...inch by inch with incredible hand sewn embellishments that would have taken me a couple of lifetimes to complete.

One of my VERY FAVORITES was "Fly Me to The Moon by Jerry Granata...unlike any quilt I've ever seen. It was accented with touches of lame' and wonderfully "out there"!

And FINALLY, the quilt that MOST impressed me was called "Why Not" which WON the Traditional Pieced category. Get this...Not only did she design and execute this quilt created with itty bitty pieces of fabric...but it was her FIRST QUILT EVER! I talked to her and she's 35 years old. The quilt is named this because her Grandma said, "It's your 1st quilt. Why not do something a little simpler than THIS quilt?" But her reply was, "Why NOT this quilt?!!" And the REST of the story is history!
What a wonderfully fun-filled day which began with a lunch featuring Lyric Kinard, a multi-media artist I greatly admire. Her inspiring lecture provided tools to find our own path to inner creativity.

After lunch, I headed to Quilt Market for one final walk-through. Enjoy the photos of the wide array of creativity that goes into every booth.

This evening I enjoyed a fun birthday dinner celebration with Marlene Glickman and my friend, Sara Hochhauser.

What a dream vacation with every minute filled with my favorite people and personal passions!
This morning my sister and I left Nebraska for the Houston Quilt Market & Festival, the biggest U.S. event of the year for quilters. With scary television coverage of torrential rain, flooding and wind in the Houston area, we didn't know quite what to expect. Though it was cloudy and raining as we landed, the flight itself was fairly uneventful. We checked into our room at The Hilton and immediately made our way to the Convention Center.

For those of you unfamiliar with this event, there are two parts to the week. Quilt Market is geared to the store buyers who make their way to Houston to purchase exciting, innovative products to entice their sewing customers. The booths are a feast for the eyes and each vendor offers a smorgasbord of color and carefully executed artistry to draw people in. It's truly a sight to behold for those of us who have a passion and love for the art of sewing and quilting. Quilt Festival opens Wednesday night and goes through Saturday. It's geared to the quilt and sewing enthusiasts who come to see, touch, hear, and learn everything they can about their passion.

Each day I plan to post a few more pictures of my daily highlights. Join me as I take you with me on my fun, fabulous week in Houston!
In 2014, I received the best gift ever in the form of a beautiful granddaughter, Laura, my very first grandbaby. I just finished sewing this adorable outfit. I love the squirrel print on the bodice paired up with the tree print on the pants. I serged all of the ruffles and used my Ruffler foot to construct evenly gathered ruffles. I piped the bodice in orange piping. I also made bloomers which can be worn on hot summer days for a more summery option. And every little girl needs a matching headband to accessorize!
This pattern comes from the website www.createkidscouture.com
I found the PDF patterns easy to work with and the directions were very detailed with lots of pictures. They have many patterns to choose from for meticulously dressed children! Most of the patterns are geared for an intermediate level seamstress.
I hadn't sewn for children since my own kids were little so I started by sewing "muslins" to make sure I got the fit right. It's important to know exactly what length the pants need to be since it would be difficult to alter the three tiered ruffles. Now that I've got the fit figured out, it will be easy to simply alter this pattern as Laura grows. I see lots of fun in my future as I sew more fun outfits for my favorite muse!
No, I don't mean having a day where you don't feel like creating...I'm talking about a full blown stop to creative ideas jumping into your head and not knowing how to recharge your creativity. I've been fighting this demon for a few weeks now. I've got limited time to create before I begin traveling again. Every day as I enter my sewing studio I swear I'll get something done before I go to bed. And day after day I find myself just wading through creative muck. Either the ideas don't stop at my house to visit or the ones that do just don't work out. I have become a deperate woman to come up with a wonderful idea...OK, I'd even settle for something mildly inspiring. I realize it's gotten to the point where it's a mental block...but even so, I've got deadlines and I'm not getting any work done! Yesterday I was in Seward, NE. and stopped in my favorite fabric store, The Udder Store (sister store to the The Cosmic Cow). Welcome to Nebraska humor at it's finest! There was my friend, elinor peace bailey who was visiting this week from the west coast. I discovered she was teaching a doll class on Saturday and I asked if I could come. Not to make a doll, but just to get out of my sewing studio that has come to curse me with anti-creativity vibes. So last night I spent three hours loading up my SUV with all of the stuff I thought I might need to do whatever I hoped I'd dream up to get this hideous lack of creativity stifled and replaced with glorious, imaginative ideas again! Leave it to elinor to guide me to the land of imagination. She suggested that we make a list of every possible idea I could come up with for this challenge that's been sitting like a lump on my sewing table. It doesn't mean I have to complete all of these ideas but now I have a list. So my next task was to select ONE...just ONE...idea from that list and list ideas I could do to fulfill this ONE tiny little task. It's a miracle I tell you but within 10 minutes one idea after the next were popping in my wee little head and all of a sudden I realized I'm unstuck. So, I've given myself permission to just toss my past two weeks of work away. Believe me, these were not anything special that I would ever want to claim as mine! So the lesson I learned today about getting unstuck is this.
1) Brainstorm freely.
2) Make lists of every possible crazy and not so crazy idea you can dream up
3) Break your big tasks down to teensy weensy little tasks that you can wrap your brain around.
4) Hang out with creative friends and ask them to help you get unstuck.
5) Don't be afraid to admit that all of the work you've done in this unproductive period is going nowhere. Toss it or at least hide it where you don't have to look at it anymore and move on in a brand new direction.
A dear friend of mine invited me to spend the day...OK...it turned into THREE days...dying fabrics with her. It's something I'd wanted to do forever but it all seemed so complicated. What a treat to see how very easy it is to create your own colorful assortment of fabrics. One of us was the "messy" girl and one of us was the "clean" girl as we mixed dyes, dipped and dried our fabrics. We talked, we laughed and we shared ideas of what wonderful things these fabrics would create. Find a friend and spend a day together in a wonderful world of COLOR!!!Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801856291436955733.post-67299900603680551852011-08-27T18:37:00.000-07:002011-08-27T18:43:54.401-07:00Sulky's Newest Certification Graduates!!!

I thought you'd enjoy seeing a sneak preview of my studio. The magazine should appear in book stores somewhere around May 20th. Let me know what you think! I love this room which is a good thing considering the hours I spend here! There was one little error in my two page spread. Under the section "Why my space works for me" somehow someone else's answer landed on my page. No, I do not live in a 120-year-old farmhouse. Rather I live in a contemporary home built and designed by my husband...Which is about as far as you can get from an old farmhouse! We love this house. It's five different levels, very open, sparsely furnished, and a house that begs to host parties. We love it here! But my FAVORITE room in the house is my sewing studio. I absolutely adore this space!
Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801856291436955733.post-10947407625551588532011-04-05T09:25:00.001-07:002011-04-05T09:46:21.692-07:00Pennsylvania - Spring 2011

Stop 2 of the Spring Sulky Season brought me to Pennsylvania where Nancy Sapin and I worked at the AQS Show in Amish Country in charming Lancaster PA. The wonderful part about Lancaster is the food where our first stop of the day was the market. Locals set up stands where you can purchase from an array of cheeses, homemade breads, and scrumptious desserts. Following the Lancaster Show I had a few days between shows where I got to know Philadelphia. I saw an absolutely breathtaking collection of couture clothing by Capucci at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The gift shops at the Museum had adorable clothes and I added a few pieces to my wardrobe. I loved the Mosaic Garden in the heart of Philadelphia where even the bathroom was converted into art!

Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801856291436955733.post-31722304060362070862011-04-05T08:54:00.001-07:002011-04-06T07:53:46.594-07:00On The Road in Atlanta - Spring 2011
We started out our Spring 2011 travels at the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo in Atlanta. Here's Ellen teaching the Thread Necklace, our "Make & Take" project. It involves yards and yards of thread...and teamwork. Cross your fingers but hopefully at the end of it all, you have a beautiful necklace made of thread. The girl in the middle with the cute skirt is Hannah Skalleberg (MadeByHannahsHands) on Etsy. She makes these adorable skirts and sells them. I don't know about you but at age 15, I wasn't nearly as industrious as this amazing young lady! And then for a little fun. "Work Hard-Play Hard" is my mantra. One evening Ellen & I got tickets to hear Bethenny Frankel ("Housewives of NYC). She shared her wisdom on life, love, looking good, losing weight, and living life. And we had to try her Skinny
Margarita which got our vote of approval!
Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801856291436955733.post-21381135144434480192011-02-17T09:33:00.000-08:002011-02-17T09:45:22.823-08:00Sewing Room Photoshoot

I've spent the past week making a few changes and additions to my sewing studio and readying it for a photo shoot in the next week. What a good feeling it is to have my fabrics organized. I added some new, colorful additions to the room. I painted the cartoon on the back of the sewing chair and love this whimsical touch! It's a wonderful feeling to know where everything is again. I can hardly wait to get started on my next project! I'll be submitting the photos to Studios magazine for possible publication.
Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801856291436955733.post-33836334964560068142011-02-17T08:56:00.000-08:002011-02-17T09:17:12.181-08:00Oh, The People You'll Meet!My husband and I were headed to our winter vacation in the Bahamas. In the Miami Airport, I was drawn to the most colorfully dressed gentleman. He had hair to his waist and half of his silver locks were dyed bright blue...the other half was his natural silver color. He wore wild printed harmen pants and a bright yellow shirt with little dogs over it. I knew he didn't look like the guys I know in Nebraska and I debated whether to ignore my curiosity or walk up and find out who this guy was. You can see from the picture, I elected to lose my inhibitions and discovered this was Patch Adams. Remember the Robin Williams movie a few years ago with the clown nosed doctor who treated very sick children? Patch was headed to Ecuador to do some work in a hospital there along with many other volunteers wearing their clown noses. How many times do we miss the opportunity to meet fabulous people because of those silly inhibitions we carry around with us? So the next time you see me in an airport and I come up and introduce myself to you, share your story with me. I'm dying to know about the intriguing person I see in front of me!Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801856291436955733.post-81605541047340567502011-02-17T08:46:00.000-08:002011-02-17T08:53:59.644-08:00Birdhouse Challenge Gone Wonky! The Sulky National Educators were recently presented with an interesting challenge. We were each given a pattern for a birdhouse which will appear in the next Sulky book. It's made of clothesline...that's right...clothesline. So I took that sweet little house and threw in my own twisted version and created a wonky birdhouse. Mine is made entirely of silks...because that's what I sew with. Count me in for a faithful viewer who has watched every single episode of every single season! In fact, I've watched most of the episodes so many times, I have them memorized! So, it's only natural that I would invite a small group of my most fashionable fashionista friends for a fabulous night of good food, good friends, and well....good wine! This season they're treating us to a full 1-1/2 hours...30 ADDITIONAL minutes of heaven! I am in awe of these gutsy contestants who expose themselves to harsh critiques of garments created in ONE day. ONE DAY! Can you imagine creating a garment that is runway worthy in ONE DAY?!!! My premiere party guests included Pia from Germany (3rd from the left in the picture) who talks just like Heidi Klum! Tim Gunn didn't show up and I'm really devastated about that but perhaps he'll fly in for next week's party!Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801856291436955733.post-40643459711871439512010-06-28T10:10:00.001-07:002010-06-28T10:32:58.212-07:00Creative Women Creating

Summer is a time when I usually don't travel a lot with my Sulky job. One of my favorite things to do is meet with my creative friends and spend an afternoon getting a little dirty as we try something new. When warm weather arrives, I really look forward to the chance to go outdoors and spend some time playing with messy paints and dyes. Find a group of women who you love and set aside some playtime! Last month the four of us played with oilsticks. As you can see, this month we painted with fabric dyes. And next month, we're going to learn some new ideas to create fabric by stitching on water soluble stabilizers. As you can see, Carla, Chris, Darlene and myself had a lot of fun creating our fabulous fabric! It's easier than you would think and goes fast! I've already gone to the art store to buy more dyes. I purchased several colors of Jacquard silk dyes. I'm anxious to paint some of my silks and then incorporate them into some new wearable art pieces. Send me photos of what you're doing with your creative friends!

Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801856291436955733.post-42483329474855829662010-06-28T09:25:00.001-07:002010-06-28T09:37:12.337-07:00Albany NY CertificationTwenty one wonderful women worked through a wide array of projects to complete this year's Certification training. It hardly seems possible to have this much fun and learn so much at the same time. In three short days these women went from being complete strangers to building friendships with other creative women. Many plan to get together in the future. And that's one of the great things about our certification classes. As a teacher, I find great joy in watching the friendships blossom. I'm hoping to return again next year to see old friends. Because it's not just the students who have newfound friends. I've established so many new friendships around the country as I teach the Certification trainings! And I'll look forward to seeing those friends again in future Certification trainings.Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8801856291436955733.post-14204920006760565992010-05-24T16:57:00.001-07:002010-05-24T17:16:18.320-07:00Certification Training

I recently had the privilege of teaching two incredibly gifted groups of women who are now Sulky Certified to teach the projects we covered in class. Nineteen women in Austin, TX and 14 women in Lincoln, NE joined me for three intense but fun-filled days. We laughed, we shared and we supported one another as we worked our way through the many projects. Certification classes are held in various locations throughout the U.S. Students learn many different techniques and develop proficiency in working with a variety of threads, stabilizers and creative ideas. Learn more by going to the Sulky website: www.sulky.com
Every single one of these women gave the Sulky Certification Training a "thumbs up" and hope to join us for future Certification classes!Design On A Whimhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17421509749432174310noreply@blogger.com0
